November 7, 2003 5th Annual Tea Party Program/Talk by Helen

PROGRAM – 5th Annual Tea Party of the Helen Moss Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Sunday November 7, 2004 at the Myers University newly renovated Ballroom at the historical University Club

1. Richard Fleischman – Introduces Helen Moss

2. Helen Moss – Celebrating 4th Year of Survivorship

Recognition of Board Members, family members & supporters of this event

Thank you, Richard. My perfect husband. Greetings to all of you. Thank you for coming to this Tea Party.

Tea Party – Why a Tea Party? 4 years ago when I discovered I had metastatic breast cancer, I called Barbara Ruhlman, and said that I must have a Tea Party to launch our Foundation. I felt that if I could help one woman and her family, it would be something that I could do before I died. Cancer is a vicious, ugly, toxic disease. A Tea Party is civilized, moderately elegant and very kind with friends surrounding you in a ritual that is soothing.

Now, I want to introduce and thank my family who have been the perfect model of support. My husband you have met. My mother who lives with us Frances Smith. My daughter Shirlee Moss and her husband, Rich Crane. They also reside in our household. My husband called my daughter about 8 months ago and asked that she and her family come and live with us because, “Your mother will live a long time if you live with her.” She and her family left Michigan and now we have four generations living under one roof. A very large roof. My daughter-in-law, Karen Moss; (you will hear about her later) My son, Jim, my baby and with the best disposition of all my 4 children.

I also want to recognize the supporters of this event: Dr. Paul Feingold, President of Myers University, who has donated this Tea Party today. He is also a Board Member. We received our first grants from St. Luke’s Foundation and the Cleveland Foundation. We also received assistance from Emerald Health Systems and were endorsed by the Woman’s Community Foundation.

ASK FOR THE ORDER

When I spoke before the Chopra lecture on April 26, I forgot to ask the audience of 2000 people to join our Foundation or renew their current annual membership. We only got one new member. This is a public Foundation , nonprofit a 501c3, and everything that we are doing is paid for by our membership. Only half of today’s event has been underwritten. I am hoping that you will donate to our cause by joining the Foundation.

Last but not least I wish to recognize our Board members who are present today: Please stand and I will introduce you.: Carol Adrine, Barbara Ruhlman, Dr. Wulf Utian, Dr. Michael Weiss, Jim Moss, and Dr. Paul Feingold.

BREAST CANCER STATISTICS:

As you probably know, Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of Sen. Edwards, who ran for VP, has discovered breast cancer. She found the lump herself just as I did (found it myself) I was amazed that I saw a doctor interviewed on TV saying that if breast cancer is detected early there is a 98% chance of cure. That is untrue and it demeans the seriousness of the disease putting it in the category of the flu. That misinformation will cause us to not take the cure and the treatment of breast cancer serious enough. I will read you the statistics: Not to scare you, but to energize you to encourage more action by our caregivers and the medical community.

Give Statistics:

Now you know why we have a Tea Party. HELP IS ON THE WAY.

MISSION & HOW WE STARTED.

REPORT ON PAST YEAR’S EVENTS

Deepak Chopra – April 26.

SIO Society for Integrative Oncology. Newly organized with sponsors HIH, Memorial Sloane Kettering, and Dana Farber. First International Conference in NY Nov. 17-19. We mailed 10,000 physicians and medical professionals the announcement. Only 2 physicians are attending, one being Dr. Tanya Edwards, who will address you shortly. And 5 of our Board Members. I will make a report to our membership and put it up on our website. All the Conferences that I have attended have a report on the website. Doctors have told me they will pay attention to integrative medicine when mainstream medical facilities give some credence to it. Well they have, and we have no one going to hear about it from Cleveland but two physicians.

Initiated our website – It is an award winning website. It has all the history and information that we have gleaned in the past 4 years. Go to our website and explore it.

NEXT YEAR

Speaker – Dr. Larry Norton
Closer relationship with our three main hospitals and ASCO. American Society of Clinical Oncologists. I met a representative at our home recently. And I will be meeting with the staff at the NY Conference this Nov.

Dr. TANYA EDWARDS – Dr. Edwards heads the New Wellness Center at the Cleveland Clinic – Center for Integrative Medicine.

NOW THE MAIN EVENT; I asked one of the most respected physicians in the US, fortunately for us living and working in Cleveland, Dr. Wulf Utian, to introduce our honored guest and speaker. He is also a very close personal friend. I have handed out today a copy of an article that Dr. Utian wrote which gives you his credentials but even more than that it shows his compassion for patients, and his passion as a healer. He is a leader among doctors.. Dr. Utian.

Gary Deng, MD, Ph.D. of Memorial Sloane Kettering, NY “Herbs & Botanicals in Cancer Prevention & Care”

Dr. Gary Deng spoke to the group followed by questions and answers – Approximately 250 people attended. The Tea Party was supported in part by a grant from the St. Luke’s Foundation and the Cleveland Foundation.
