The Story of Helen Moss

When I first discovered my cancer, I very naively felt that I could be just like Bruce Willis' character in 'Die Hard' and that I would fight this cancer off and be victorious. However, the treatment pulled me down and 'fighting' or that mind set drained my energy.

Parker, Moss foundation fund CWRU oncology professorship

Helen Moss, a slender, 75-year-old woman with boundless enthusiasm, has been dealing with cancer the last 11 years, though you wouldn't know.

Ms. Moss, a former vice president of Merrill Lynch, credits a combination of alternative medicine treatments, including herbal medicines, acupuncture and hydrotherapy, with extending her life and reducing her suffering from the dreaded disease. To spread the word about and boost the research into such treatments, Ms. Moss and her Helen Moss Cancer Research Foundation have raised $1.5 million to fund a professorship at Case Western Reserve University's School of Medicine in “integrative oncology.” The new program aims to blend mainstream cancer treatments with complementary therapies, with the goal of extending and enhancing the quality of life of people with cancer.

Champion of integrative oncology brings international conference to Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Helen Moss is one persuasive woman.

It should have come as no surprise to those who know her that the Society for Integrative Oncology is holding its eighth annual conference in Cleveland this week because of her efforts.

Having Cleveland, where three major medical centers are based, serve as host made sense to Moss, a longtime SIO board member from Bratenahl and a tireless local champion of integrative oncology.

Award to Dean Pamela Davis and Case Western Reserve University PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 27 November 2011 10:03

In honor and recogniotion of their leadership in establishing the professorship, the first of its kind in integrative oncology.

The Helen Moss Cancer Research Foundation presents to Dean Pam Davis and Case Western Reserve University an award only previously given to President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama.

Letter from Helen Moss to Dean Pamela Davis:

I would like to extend my appreciation for your superb academic leadership. Your insight and commitment to innovation and excellence have resulted in the creation of an endowed professorship in integrative oncology at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine that will serve as a national model for the creation of a seamless program in medical education, biomedical research and patient care.

In your role as the Honorary Chairman of the Eighth International Conference, you and the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine served as pioneers in formally linking one of the most prestigious medical schools in this nation with the quickly developing field of integrative oncology.

It is with deep appreciation that I present you, Dean of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine,  with two Lilly Candlesticks, which represent the best that Virginia Artisans have to offer.  They were proudly made in America, hand-crafted by a former marine and presented to two Presidents of the United States –George  W. Bush (2009) and Barack Obama (2010)--  by the Commandant of the Marines.  The Parker Hannifin --  Helen Moss Cancer Research Foundation Professorship in Integrative Oncology also represents the essence of America.  It exemplifies the tradition of leadership, excellence and innovation for which the School of Medicine has been recognized for many decades.

Professorship Announced, November 10, 2011 PDF Print E-mail

Case Western Reserve University Press Release:

Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine is honored to announce gifts to establish the inaugural Parker Hannifin – Helen Moss Cancer Research Foundation Professorship in Integrative Oncology. This professorship will establish the School of Medicine and its affiliate hospitals as international leaders in teaching, research, and patient care in the field of integrative oncology.

The gifts from The Parker Foundation and Helen Moss Cancer Research Foundation, among other donors, will establish an umbrella program for integrative oncology – an opportunity not offered at other institutions. The professorship seeks to change the way cancer is treated by employing the practice of integrative medicine and therapies designed to extend the lives of cancer patients using a more holistic and natural approach, along with traditional medicine. Historically, cancer has been treated as an acute illness; the Professorship in Integrative Oncology will research the impact of treating cancer as a chronic condition focused on alleviating the pain and suffering of patients through non-toxic approaches to improve immune system capabilities. Such approaches can include complementary and alternative medicine; diet, exercise and healthy lifestyle choices; as well as the use of neutraceuticals, herbs and botanicals. The holder of this leadership chair will bring together the finest educational, research, and clinical resources available at Case Western Reserve and its affiliate hospitals to bring new complementary and natural treatment options to patients.

Please see the remainder of the Case Western Reserve University Press Release here.

The Parker Foundation pledged $1,000,000 to create a professorship of integrative oncology at Case Western University Medical School, consistent with its belief that innovative and natural health treatments have an important place in treating cancer and saving lives. Parker Hannifin Corporation, a global company with over 60,000 employees, has a long standing tradition of taking good care of its employees.  Dan Serbin, Parker’s Executive Vice President of Human Resources, advised the conference participants about the company’s complementary and alternative benefits program as a shining example of the leading edge offering the company provides in its benefits options.  Parker is unique in offering a comprehensive benefits program in the United States that includes alternative medicine treatments designed to offer considerable choice and flexibility to employees and covered family members, while placing an important emphasis on prevention and wellness.

“Parker will continue to offer a wide-variety of coverage options, so that employees can select the program that best fits them and their families,” commented Serbin. “Our benefit packages are structured to encourage healthy choices, as well as preventative care and alternative therapies.”
